I have read your thoughts and concerns and come up with a working setting and set of guidelines to begin the project.
Everything here are just guidelines, break them if you feel you must but when doing so be considerate of the setting. There is more on moderation at the bottom of this post.
The Setting
A continent, the shape of a vertically stretched oval (I'm trying to be vague so we can fill in the exact shape of beaches and coves etc. in the stories), with a climate varying from arctic in the north to Mediterranean in the south. To the east is a small chain of islands. To cross from the most northerly point to the most southerly point by horseback would take about a month.
The culture is the equivalent of medieval/early renaissance Europe although feel free to take liberties with this. Technology should be fitting of this era.
In terms of wild life it should fit the setting but mythological creatures are allowed, however they should follow the character guidelines below.
The timespan, at least to begin with, is a period of 100 years, which means don't write about the distant past or future.
Magic exists, it can be manifested in any way (see the character guidelines for more information).
Characters
The power level of characters is based on a simple idea, they must not be the undisputed most power creature in the setting. This means if your character fought any of the more powerful existing characters there is a decent (let’s say 40-45%) chance they would lose. Animals or mythological creatures with less than human intelligence can be (at the very most) 6 times stronger than average to powerful characters i.e. it would take 6 average characters to defeat the most powerful animal/mythological creature.
It should be assumed that at current the most powerful characters are veteran knights with no magical abilities.
Moderation
To begin with there will be no formal moderation process beyond removing unrelated or trolling posts. Instead just view everything that is written as potential 'facts' and only accept those which you like or those which reoccur amongst multiple peoples work. If this fails and it becomes a big mess I will reassess and may start enforcing a set of rules similar to those above.
If anyone has any problems or improvements with the above please post here, be sure to read every post that has been made before you post though as the main reason I moved the discussion to the forum was that I saw lots of different conversations on the subreddit which often were talking about the same things.
Lots of people wanted a place for meta discussion so I may leave this forum open after we start for that purpose as I think it would be more useful for that than another sub.
